Directed by Marcus Tortorici and Henry Busby, “DANCE (You See It)” is a piece that fully honours the fundamentals of the classic hip hop / rap video. We’ve got performance, real locations and a smattering of candid / documentary footage, all shot on 16mm for good measure. Really, what more could one ask for? Oh, and the track from Andy Mineo and Wordsplayed is pure fire too, just FYI.

The result of all these ingredients is a piece that feels immediate, elemental and, well, real. Historically, the hip hop / rap video has generally gone one of two ways, either grounded and immediate like this one, or flashy and over the top, a kind of wish fulfilment fantasy. The latter is what comes to mind when most people think of hip hop / rap videos, but it’s in the former where the heritage of this fine genre truly lies. Next up I’m going to feature another fine example of this gorgeous and grounded style, but for now, “DANCE (You See It)”.
